FAQ

  • How does buy now, pay later work?

Buy now, pay later, or BNPL, is a payment option where a customer pays for a purchase over time in instalments. Afterpay is a leading BNPL product and is now integrated with certain Square eCommerce products. With Afterpay, Square merchants can let customers pay in four interest-free instalments over six weeks. The best part is merchants get paid upfront.

  • How do I set up buy now, pay later?

BNPL by Afterpay is already integrated with Square Online, Square Online Checkout, Virtual Terminal Payment via Text Message, Square Invoices and our Web Payments SDK, and is available out of the box for all eligible businesses in Canada. Just log in to your Square account and you’ll see Afterpay as a payment method in your Square account settings.

  • How much does buy now, pay later cost?

There is no additional charge for your customers to buy now, pay later – they make four interest-free payments over six weeks, the first payment being due at time of purchase. Merchants using Afterpay get paid the full amount at time of purchase, minus a 6% + 30¢ processing fee on the total order.

There are no processing fees charged on the remaining instalments, and no other monthly fees or activation costs. Afterpay transaction fees are exclusive of applicable taxes, which should apply on a per-transaction basis.

  • What is the best BNPL solution for me?

There are many BNPL providers in the market, but what sets Afterpay apart is they offer one transparent solution to shoppers with no credit checks and no interest. Afterpay already comes integrated with Square’s eCommerce products, so you can start off in minutes.

  • What about fraud and chargebacks on BNPL payments?

The platform is set up so Afterpay takes on the risk of fraud for you so you can focus on growing your business. You will receive the full payment and at no risk to your business.

  • How does buy now, pay later affect my customer’s credit score?

Afterpay doesn’t require external credit checks from your Canadian customers to qualify nor application fees, so signing up won’t hurt their credit score.

  • Where can I accept Afterpay?

Currently, you can accept Afterpay payments on your Square Online site, Square Online Checkout payment links and buy buttons, Square Virtual Terminal Payment via Text Message and Square Invoices. Afterpay is also available on Square’s developer platform.

  • Do my custom processing rates carry over to Afterpay payments as well?

All transactions processed through Afterpay will be charged at our standard Afterpay rates. This Afterpay specific rate allows you to get paid in full, while Afterpay takes on all risk associated with customer fraud and late payments.
