This article is for any Square business looking to gain more information about their customers spending, spending habits, returning customers, new customers and/or usage of your Loyalty programmes.

About Customer Insights

Customer Insights can help you better understand your customers’ behaviours through their payments. By having reporting and analytics software, you can uncover these insights to continue doing what’s working and to inform future business decisions.

Before you begin

When reviewing your customer insights, you’ll need to understand the following terms for more context:

Term

Definition

Total customer visits

The total number of purchases made by customers during your selected time period.

Total amount spent

The total amount of money that customers spent during your selected time period.

Average spend per customer

The average amount customers spent during your selected time period, including VAT and tip.

Average visits per customer

The average number of purchases made by your customers during your selected time period.

View customer insights

To view your customer insights:

  1. From your Square Dashboard, navigate to Marketing & Loyalty > Customer directory

  2. Click Insights > Visits

You can filter your insights by date, locations, channel and customer groups for more specific information.

New vs returning customer visits graph

The New vs returning customer visits graph compares purchases made by first-time customers versus those who have purchased with you in the past. Customers are added to a sale when they pay with a card or you add them manually for cash or other tender sales.

Visit frequency graph

The Visit frequency graph displays the number of visits customers made to your business during your selected time period. Use this chart to better understand your distribution of customers by visit count, which is a good indicator of overall customer loyalty and retention.

Example: one-time visitors are those who’ve only made one purchase at your business; two-time visitors are those who’ve only made two purchases (with the same payment card) at your business; and so on.

Loyalty visits graph

The Loyalty visits graph displays the amount of sales you’ve processed over a specific period of time, split between customers who are enrolled in your Loyalty programme(s) vs those who are not.

You can also click View loyalty page to get more specific information about these sales, including average customer spend, customer visits, top customers, rewards your customers have redeemed, and more.
